Balancing Between Students Who Do Homework And Those Who Do Not

Terms like home learning, brain exercises and study time are all better ways to talk about homework. In the classroom, you can try replacing the word homework with these terms. But what if we changed the concept of homework all together?

My kids attend a Montessori school which generally does not assign homework. What homework they tend to get in the elementary levels is a packet of assorted reading and math that they have an entire week to do at whatever pace works for them. My son’s homework is optional and he always opts out.

Keep in mind, not all tricks will work for all kids. You need to choose what you think would motivate your child the most. You will set yourself up for a lifetime of homework ease if you instill in them now the expectation that homework is done right after school. Because if it’s something that happens every day, my kids know what to expect. But there are ways to help ease them into this new transition of coming home from school and doing homework.

I remember hating school because of all the homework. When kids first start school, they’re excited to learn. By the end of elementary school, they’re sick of school… and of learning.
